Zaporizhzhya NPP reconnects to backup power line after four-month absence
The Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) has managed to connect to the only available backup power transmission line for the first time in four months, according to International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) Director-General Rafael Grossi on July 3.
However, Grossi went on to add that the situation with power supply at the site remains extremely fragile.
Grossi said that the plant is now linked to a 330 kV line. Previously, Zaporizhzhya NPP had relied on a single mainline of 750 kV for external electricity — necessary for reactor cooling and other essential functions. Prior to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia in 2022, the IAEA said that there were four 750 kV lines in operation.
“While the reconnection of the backup power transmission line is a positive development, the situation concerning the plant’s external power supply remains highly vulnerable, highlighting the unreliable state of nuclear and on-site security,” said Grossi.
Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukrainian military intelligence, reported that Russians had completed preparations for a potential terrorist attack at the occupied Zaporizhzhya NPP. According to his information, explosive devices were placed near four out of the six power units.
