Russia has prepared everything for terrorist attack at Zaporizhzhya NPP, warns Zelenskyy
Russia is considering conducting a nuclear attack at the occupied Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on June 22.
The Ukrainian leader stated that Russia uses the ZNPP as an element in its aggression, shelling neighboring Ukrainian-controlled areas from the cover of the nuclear facility, as well as using the plant as a base for weapons and troops.
“Now our intelligence has received information that Russia is considering the scenario of a terrorist attack at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant,” he said in a video address.
“A terrorist attack with radiation leakage. They have prepared everything for this.”
Radiation has no state borders and who it will be affected is determined only by the direction of the wind, Zelenskyy added.
Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to share all available information with its partners and all interested global parties, including Europe, the United States, China, Brazil, India, and the Arab and African countries.
“There should never be any terrorist attacks on nuclear power plants anywhere,” Zelenskyy stressed.
“This time it should not be like with Kakhovka (Dam destruction) — as the world has been warned, so the world can and must act.”
On June 20, Ukrainian military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov reported that Russian forces had mined the cooling pond at ZNPP, though Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, insisted on June 21 that no mining had been observed. Grossi has warned that the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Station and Dam poses a threat to the operation of ZNPP, as the necessary water level for cooling the reactors could be lost within a few weeks.
Following his visit to ZNPP on June 15, Grossi reported that the situation was serious but stabilizing.
Current water levels in the cooling pond are enough to sustain ZNPP for up to a year, Ukraine’s nuclear operator Energoatom has stated.
