Russia’s campaign of missile strikes on
Ukraine’s cities and power
grid is only possible because Ukraine lacks modern air defense systems in
sufficient numbers, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his March
22 evening address.
The president was commenting on the latest wave of Russian cruise and ballistic missiles aimed at the Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
“The key issue is air defense; physical protection of facilities and recovery after strikes depend on the people here in Ukraine,” said Zelenskyy.
“But true and complete protection from Russian missiles and drones can only be achieved with enough political will from our partners. This is what we tell them every day.”
He added that such Russian attacks are successful only because Ukraine does not have enough modern air defense systems.
“Frankly, it requires enough political will to provide them,” the president said.
“All partners know what is needed and who can make truly life-saving decisions.”
Early in the morning on March 22, Russia attacked Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with a mixture of cruise and ballistic missiles, preceded by a wave of kamikaze drones. A total of 151 drones and missiles were involved in the attack, with Ukraine’s air defenses intercepting 92 of them, including 55 UAVs and 37 missiles.
