HUR chief confident Ukraine’s energy network will withstand Russian attacks
Russia will not be able to completely destroy Ukraine’s
energy system, the head of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR),
Kyrylo Budanov, said in an interview with TSN
published on Aug. 5.
According to him, Russia has increased the protection of its energy sector in case Ukraine targets it in response.
"All these nodes are very heavily protected. Just as we are trying to protect them. Similarly, similar measures are being taken in Russia," he said.
"Only they have chosen to build up their air defense system more. They have much greater capabilities to do that. Because they are producers of such systems."
It would be wrong to say that "we will completely put it down. Just as they will not completely destroy ours. The Soviet system was maximally branched and duplicated, with three or four lines, or duplicated in certain nodes. It is possible to make life difficult. It is almost impossible to destroy it completely."
Russia has launched eight missile and drone attacks on Ukraine's power system since March 22,, resulting in reduced electricity generation at Ukrainian power plants. As a result, rolling blackouts were imposed in all Ukraine's oblasts on May 14.
