Ukraine may only use F-16s within its own territory, says Danish defense minister
Ukraine may only use U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets donated by Denmark within its own territory, Reuters news quoted Danish Defense Minister Jakob Ellemann-Jensen as saying on Aug. 21.
“We donate weapons under the condition that they are used to drive the enemy out of the territory of Ukraine. And no further than that,” he said.
“Those are the conditions, whether it’s tanks, fighter planes or something else.”
F-16s for Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Sweden, the Netherlands, and Denmark on Aug. 19-20. Amsterdam and Copenhagen subsequently promised to transfer 61 F-16 fighter jets to Kyiv. The Dutch will provide 42, and the Danish - 19.
Denmark can transfer the first six aircraft by late 2023.
Ukrainian pilots have also started training on Sweden-made Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets.
Ukrainian pilots are undergoing F-16 training in the United Kingdom and Sweden, said Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk. The training is also underway in Denmark.
