Kremlin’s ‘talking head’ calls NATO Summit communique a ‘threat’ to Russia
Russian dictator’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov labeled the NATO
summit declaration a “serious threat to the security” of Russia and warned the
West with “countermeasures,” BBC
reported on July 11.
These “countermeasures” will apply to the decision that
Ukraine will irreversibly become a member of the Alliance. Peskov argues that
in this way NATO is trying to “suppress Russia and inflict a strategic defeat
on it.”
“We see that in fact NATO’s military infrastructure is constantly,
gradually moving towards our borders,” he said.
Peskov also added that Russian officials are discussing
changes to Russia’s nuclear doctrine, but “this is not the only way to deter,”
the TASS propagandist agency writes.
The dictator’s spokesman repeated the Kremlin’s narrative
that NATO is already “de facto fully involved” in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
NATO 75th Anniversary Summit in Washington, D.C.
The NATO leaders’ summit in Washington began on July 9 and
will last until July 11. For the first time, it will be attended by the leaders
of 32 countries - full membership since Sweden and Finland joined NATO.
This year’s summit is dedicated to a landmark date - 75th
anniversary of the Alliance, which was founded on April 4, 1949, after signing
of the North Atlantic Treaty in the US capital.
On July 10, 32 NATO countries approved the final declaration of the
Alliance’s summit in Washington. The document consists of 38 points
and an additional part on commitments to long-term security assistance to
Ukraine.
It provides for €40 billion in aid in 2025, establishes Ukraine’s irreversible membership in NATO, the creation of the NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training and Exercise Center (JATEC), and more.
