The German Foreign Ministry has criticized Hungary for causing damage during its presidency of the Council of the European Union, The Guardian reported on July 12.
Budapest assumed the rotating EU presidency on July 1. Hungarian far-right Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has fueled controversy by traveling to Russia and China without backing from his EU counterparts, The Guardian reported. Orbán also met with Donald Trump in Florida on July 11.
"We have to see how the Hungarian council presidency continues," a German Ministry spokesperson said when asked about Berlin's response to Orbán's recent diplomatic visits.
"We are now on day 12, and it has already caused a lot of damage."
Orbán's "peace" tour
Orbán arrived in Kyiv on July 2 for his first visit to Ukraine since the war with Russia outbreak, met with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and proposed a ceasefire to expedite negotiations with Russia. He claimed that Ukraine's peace initiatives "take a lot of time" and asked Zelenskyy to consider "an alternative approach: first ceasefire, then negotiate peace."
Orbán made an unannounced visit to Moscow on July 5. Russian dictator Vladimir Putin said Russia insists on the withdrawal of the Ukrainian Armed Forces from Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhya, and Kherson oblasts during a meeting with Orbán.
Orbán visited Beijing and discussed his "peace plan" with Chinese President Xi Jinping on July 8.
Orbán met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Washington on July 10, seeking support for his "peace mission."
