Trump represents 'chance for peace' in Ukraine — Hungarian FM

Budapest views the possible second presidency of Donald Trump as a “chance for peace” in Ukraine, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on July 10.
In an interview with Reuters on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington, Szijjarto said Hungary's goal is to end the war through "peace talks," engaging both Russia and Ukraine.
“I think a very strong external impact must take place in order to make them negotiate at least,” the minister said.
“Who has the chance for that in the upcoming period? That's only President Trump if he is elected.”
According to Szijjarto, Hungarian PM Viktor Orban’s recent meetings with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have shown the huge divide between Moscow and Kyiv’s negotiating positions.
Throughout the war, Hungary has maintained a stance drastically different from the rest of NATO allies. Budapest repeatedly insisted that Russia cannot be defeated, meaning that Ukraine and the West will have no choice but to accede to Putin’s demands.
Orban’s latest meeting with the Russian leader was on July 5, when he arrived in Moscow after a visit to Kyiv, before departing for Beijing.
European Council President Charles Michel reminded that Hungary, which holds the presidency of the Council of Europe since July 1, does not have a mandate to negotiate with Russia on behalf of the EU.
Orban's visit to Ukraine on July 2— his first in 12 years — came as a surprise. In Kyiv, he met with Zelenskyy and proposed the idea of a "ceasefire" for faster negotiations with Russia.
