Drone attacks reported in multiple Russian cities, including in 2014 Olympic city and resort hub of Sochi
Russia reportedly came under drone attack around the cities of Sochi, Smolensk, and Shebkino on Oct. 1, according to several reports this morning.
A number of drones were sighted over the resort city of Sochi in Krasnodar Krai resulting in the cancelation of more than 10 flights at the city’s airport, according to reports on Ukrainian social media.
The Russian defense ministry later reported that several drones were downed in the area, according to the BBC’s Russian service.
Sochi is one of Russia’s primary tourist destinations and lies just under 500km away from occupied Crimea. Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is believed to own a vast summer residence near the city.
A market in Shebkino, Belgorod Oblast, was reportedly set ablaze during this morning’s attack, injuring three people and damaging commercial property and cars, according to the oblast’s governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov. The region lies along Ukraine’s northeastern border.
Three Ukrainian drones were shot down in Smolensk, claimed the oblast’s government's Vasyl Anokhin, who added that no casualties have been reported.
Local authorities in Belgorod Oblast also reported an air attack on Sept. 30. Russian air defense units allegedly "knocked down two air targets."
Drones were also sighted in Bryansk Oblast.
Ukraine’s SBU Security Service successfully attacked a Russian electrical substation in Kursk Oblast with drones on Sept. 29.
