Dolphins are dying in the Sea of Azov due to Russian aggression — video report
Not only humans, but also animals, including marine mammals, are being killed in the war waged by Russia against Ukraine due to the barbarism of the Russian army, Mariupol mayor advisor, Petro Andriushchenko wrote on Telegram on May 19.
He posted a video of a dead dolphin found on the coast of the Sea of Azov.
"Dolphins are continuing to die out. With this air temperature and at this time of year, only the occupiers' actions could lead to the environmental deterioration (we see) in the Azov Sea," Andriushchenko wrote.
This is not the first time that the actions of the Russian army have led to a disaster for marine life.
Environmentalists have long been sounding the alarm about the state of the Black Sea marine ecosystem.
Ivan Rusev, the head of the research department of the Tuzly Lagoons National Nature Park (located in Odesa Oblast) and a doctor of ecology, reported recently on the grim statistics of marine mammals dying out due to the actions of the Russian army.
He said that he estimates that hundreds of dolphins died in the Black Sea during April 2023 alone.
He has also estimated that 50,000 Black Sea dolphins have been killed since Russia started its full-scale invasion of Ukraine last year.
Mines, underwater explosions and the powerful sonar of Russian submarines and warships are to blame for the rise in dolphin deaths, he said in a report aired by RFE/RL on Dec. 3.
