Black Sea won’t be safe for at least 20 years due to Russia’s actions, top admiral says
The Black Sea will not be considered safe for at least another 20 years due to Russia’s actions, the Ukrainian Naval Forces reported on Facebook on April 26, citing the navy’s top commander, Rear Admiral Oleksiy Neizhpapa.
The Azov and Black Seas will only be considered safe if Ukraine regains control over all its territories, the admiral told the Black Sea Security Forum in Bulgaria in an online speech.
Neizhpapa recalled the attempt to capture Tuzla Island in 2003, the war in Georgia in 2008 that starred the since-destroyed Moskva missile cruiser, Russia’s illegal annexation of the Crimea in 2014, the occupation of the Sea of Azov in 2022, and the ongoing war in the Black Sea.
He emphasized that “Russia’s imperial ambitions extend not only to the Black and Azov Seas, but also to the Baltic and North Seas — and the Pacific Ocean.”
