Russian forces deliberately targeted a Dnipro-Zaporizhzhia regional passenger train, with rescuers searching for one of the train attendants on Sept. 8.
1:55 p.m. Ukrzaliznytsia confirmed that a train attendant was killed in the Russian attack. According to the company, the woman returned to the train after an evacuation order had been issued and passengers had been warned of heightened danger.
Ukrzaliznytsia CEO Oleksandr Pertsovskyi reported the incident.
According to him, the train had been stopped in advance after a threat was detected, and passengers were evacuated to a mobile shelter set up nearby.
Pertsovskyi initially said contact had been lost with one of the train attendants. According to available accounts, she may have returned to the train despite the evacuation order and heightened danger. Rescue operations were underway at the scene.
The Ukrzaliznytsia CEO urged employees and passengers not to ignore evacuation orders and to take shelter during threats. Buses are being arranged to transport passengers, he added.
Earlier on Sept. 8, Russian forces carried out two targeted drone strikes on a Kyiv-Sumy passenger train as it approached Sumy. The train was stopped in advance, and passengers and the locomotive crew were evacuated. No injuries were initially reported.
On Sept. 5, Russian forces attacked a passenger train bound for Kherson near Chornobaivka. Two locomotives were damaged and two people were injured in the strike, while 21 passengers and the train crew were evacuated.
