A local ceasefire took effect near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant to allow repairs to a power line and restore external electricity supplies to the facility, the IAEA said on Sept. 5.
Ukraine and Russia reached an agreement on a local ceasefire mediated by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The IAEA said Ukrainian specialists would begin repairs Saturday on the 330-kilovolt Ferrosplavna-1 power line supplying the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. The line was damaged by fighting on Aug. 20. Since then, the plant's reactors have been cooled using emergency generators.
"The plant is now running low on diesel fuel and, within days, faces a complete loss of power unless external electricity supplies are restored or additional fuel can be delivered to the facility, which is located in an active combat zone," the statement said.
The IAEA said this was the seventh local ceasefire around the Zaporizhzhia plant since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion aimed at preventing a nuclear accident.
On Aug. 20, Energoatom reported the 27th blackout at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion. The company said repeated power outages were worsening the condition of the plant's equipment and increasing nuclear and radiation safety risks.
