Zelenskyy introduces Ukraine’s new Defense Minister Rustem Umerov
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has officially introduced newly appointed Defense Minister Rustem Umerov to the leadership of Ukraine’s Defense Ministry and the Armed Forces General Staff, according to a press release on Sept. 7.
Umerov’s key tasks include expanding international cooperation, improving communication with the families of fallen and wounded soldiers, improving transparency at the ministry, and reducing bureaucracy, Zelenskyy said.
"Trust is very important; trust is where work begins, and lost trust is probably where everything ends. Today, society is in a very difficult emotional situation. Maximum transparency and maximum trust are key," Zelenskyy said.
“This will be one of the priorities of the new minister. I don't think we have much time... If we are going to reform and take concrete steps, I would recommend doing it quickly.”
Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, appointed Rustem Umerov as Defense Minister on September 6 after dismissing Oleksii Reznikov the day before.
Reznikov had led the ministry since November 2021. Umerov had overseen the State Property Fund since September 2022.
