It is difficult for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to understand Western fears of escalating Russia's war in Ukraine when Ukrainian civilians are killed every day, he said in an interview with Reuters on May 20.
“Everyone says a word that sounds the same in all languages: everyone fears escalation," he said.
"Everyone is used to the fact that Ukrainians die - for people, this is not an escalation."
He would like to see more involvement from Ukraine's partners in the war, but worries that this is prevented by their fear of confrontation with Russia.
"It's a matter of will,” Zelenskyy said.
Zelenskyy expressed frustration with the time it takes Ukraine's allies to make decisions on providing military aid, naming the slow supply of air defenses to the country as a special burden.
Germany's initiative to strengthen air defense in Ukraine
Germany will immediately provide Ukraine with an additional Patriot air defense system to repel Russian airstrikes, the German Defense Ministry announced on April 13.

Germany called on its EU and NATO partners to strengthen Ukraine's air defense on April 18. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also appealed to other countries to support the initiative at the G7 foreign ministers meeting.
The G7 ministers agreed to bolster Ukrainian Air Defense at this meeting.
Six additional Patriot systems were secured for Ukraine from its NATO partners, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced.
