Scholz reports global skepticism about Russia’s war during Beijing visit
Even countries with close ties to Russia are increasingly questioning the validity of its prolonged conflict with Ukraine, according to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, DW reported on April 20.
During his recent three-day visit to Beijing, Scholz discussed with Chinese President Xi Jinping the importance of an international peace conference to be held in Switzerland in an attempt to put an end to Russian aggression.
The meeting gave a "very important boost" to diplomatic efforts to achieve peace, he said.
On June 15-16, Switzerland will host an international summit based on Kyiv's vision for an enduring peace in Ukraine.
The Swiss government has stated that the event seeks to "create a common understanding" on the steps necessary to establish "a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace for Ukraine in accordance with international law and the UN Charter.”
In preparation for the meeting, Switzerland has held talks with the G7 countries, as well as China, India, South Africa, Brazil, Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia. The summit will be held at the Bürgenstock resort near Lucerne.
It's unclear whether the event will be attended by heads of state or lower-level officials, particularly when it comes to the Chinese delegation, as Beijing's participation is in question.
Russia has not been invited to the summit, although the conference is supposed to present a "concrete roadmap for Russia's participation in the peace process.
