North Korean troops to become ‘cannon fodder’ if sent to Ukraine, Pentagon says

Pentagon Press Secretary, Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder floated the possibility of North Korean soldiers becoming “cannon fodder” should they be deployed in Ukraine to fight alongside Russia, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported on June 26.
This statement came amid the US closely monitoring Pyongyang and Moscow deepening military cooperation.
"If I were North Korea's chief of military staff, I would question sending my forces as cannon fodder in an illegal war against Ukraine," Ryder said at a briefing.
Ryder also commented on rumors that South Korea should consider a nuclear option amid military cooperation between Russia and North Korea.
"Our policy regarding the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula has not changed," the Pentagon spokesperson said.
“The US will continue to work closely with allies from South Korea, Japan and other regions to ensure security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.”
Putin's visit to DPRK
Putin and Kim Jong Un signed a "comprehensive strategic partnership" agreement, seeking to expand economic and military cooperation and strengthen a "united front" against Washington.
Central Telegraph Agency in Pyongyang earlier published the clauses of the North Korea - Russia agreement signed by Putin and Kim Jong Un.
Pyongyang and Moscow undertook to provide "mutual assistance" in the event of "aggression" against one of the countries, the document said.
In this event the countries will agree on measures to coordinate positions, ensure cooperation in the threats’ "elimination".
The agreement also contains the following clauses:
Moscow and Pyongyang undertake not to enter into agreements with third countries that may pose a "threat to the sovereignty and security" of the two countries
- Two countries seek to step up bilateral trade and create "favorable conditions" for economic cooperation
- Moscow and Pyongyang agreed to "develop cooperation" in space, peaceful nuclear, AI and IT industries
- countries intensify cooperation in the field of propaganda to counter allegedly "unreliable information and informational provocations"
- Russia and North Korea will create a "system of taking measures" to strengthen the defense potential with the aim of "preventing war, ensuring peace."
The agreement on the strategic partnership is indefinite.
