Ukraine receives American M1 Abrams battle tanks months ahead of schedule
Ukraine has received the initial shipment of American M1 Abrams tanks several months ahead of expectations, confirmed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sept. 25, without confirming exactly how many were received.
The timely arrival of these tanks could
play a crucial role in Ukraine’s ongoing counteroffensive efforts.
The M1 Abrams tank, named in honor of
General Creighton Abrams, a former Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, has been in
production since 1981 by General Dynamics Land Systems. There are three primary
versions of the M1 Abrams: M1, M1A1, and M1A2.
Notably, the Abrams features robust
anti-projectile protection due to its multi-layered composite armor constructed
from steel, ceramics, Kevlar, and reinforced with depleted uranium. It can also
be equipped with the Tank Urban Survival Kit (TUSK) for added protection. The
tank also includes a compartment isolated for ammunition and a gas fire
suppression system in the crew compartment.
The tank’s turret is equipped with two
six-barreled smoke grenade launchers for camouflage purposes. In the M1
version, it is armed with a 105mm rifled gun (M68A1) and carries a 55-round
ammunition load. The more modern variants, like the M1A1 and M1A2, feature a
120mm smoothbore gun (M256A1) with a 40-round ammunition capacity.
Armament includes a 12.7mm M2HB heavy
machine gun and two 7.62mm M240 machine guns (one coaxial, one pintle-mounted).
The Abrams tank boasts a ballistic fire control system, with a laser
rangefinder and thermal imaging device integrated into the main gunner’s sight.
The commander can also engage targets in lieu of the gunner.
The tank’s dimensions are 9.8 meters in
length, 3.7 meters in width, and 2.9 meters in height, with a weight range of
57 to 61 tons. Its 1,500-horsepower gas turbine engine allows it to achieve speeds
of up to 72 km/h (45 mph), with a maximum range of 426 kilometers (265 miles).
In the primary M1A1 and M1A2 Abrams tank models, a 120mm M256 gun is installed, and these tanks use three types of depleted uranium rounds:
- M829A2: 78 cm in length, 1,675 m/s muzzle velocity, 9 kg penetrator mass, effective range of 3 km, and armor penetration of 750 mm.
- M829A3: 80 cm in length, 1,555 m/s muzzle velocity, 8.1 kg penetrator mass, effective range of 4 km, and armor penetration of 800 mm.
- M829A4: 80 cm in length, 1,650 m/s muzzle velocity, 9 kg penetrator mass, effective range of 4 km, and armor penetration of 880 mm.
The armor penetration figures are provided
for uniform steel armor. Depleted uranium, the material used in these rounds,
constitutes up to 60% of natural uranium and is known for its pyrophoric
properties; upon impact, its small fragments can ignite instantly.
