US Senate to delay holiday recess for Ukraine aid talks — report

Senate is expected to delay the start of its Christmas recess to continue negotiations
between Democrats and Republicans on border security and assistance to Ukraine,
according to several senators who spoke with Reuters on Dec. 14.
Lawmakers indicated the Senate would resume work on Monday, Dec. 18, pushing back the holiday break. The House, however, has already started its recess as planned on Dec. 14.
Politico reports that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer told colleagues that the border negotiations were moving swiftly and that the recess could be postponed. Talks are expected to carry on through the end of the week and into the weekend.
U.S. President Joe Biden has urged Congress to approve additional aid packages for Ukraine and Israel. But House Speaker Republican Mike Johnson and Senate Republicans insist they will only vote for the aid if it includes measures for tightened security at the U.S.-Mexico border.
