US presents new aid package to Ukraine after Zelenskyy’s meeting with Biden at G7 summit
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with his counterpart from the United States Joe Biden during his working trip to Japan to attend the G7 leaders’ summit, the Ukrainian leader reported on Twitter on May 21.
"We discussed further cooperation to bolster the defense capabilities of our country, the implementation of the Ukrainian Peace Formula and the projects on Ukraine's reconstruction and recovery," Zelenskyy wrote.
He also thanked for the already provided support, which totals $37 billion already.
One of the main decisions made was the U.S. President's decision to support the international fighter jets' coalition, the Ukrainian leader said.
The U.S. Department of Defence has announced on May 21 additional security assistance for Ukraine worth $375 million. It includes the following:
- Additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS);
- 155mm and 105mm artillery rounds;
- Tube-Launched, Optically-Tracked, Wire-Guided (TOW) missiles;
- Javelin and AT-4 anti-armor systems;
- Laser-guided rocket system munitions;
- Demolition munitions;
- Armored bridging systems;
- Armored medical treatment vehicles;
- Trucks and trailers to transport heavy equipment;
- Logistics support equipment;
- Thermal imagery systems;
- Spare parts and other field equipment.
Biden added that new sanctions which were discussed during the G7 Summit will put additional pressure on the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and will help to hold his supporters to account.
The U.S. president also called for a just peace for Ukraine, while stressing that the territorial integrity and state sovereignty of Ukraine are not negotiable.
"What you've achieved is a matter for the entire world and we’re in awe of what you've done so far,” Biden said after the meeting with Zelenskyy.
“Together with the entire G7, we have Ukraine's back, and I promise we're not going anywhere."
