Ukrainian military releases footage of ATACMS use – video
A small number of U.S.-made ATACMS ballistic missiles have already been used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces against Russian troops, as seen in a YouTube video Ukraine’s General Staff Strategic Communications department published on Feb. 22.
Notably, the video claims that ATACMS missiles were used to destroy a Russian S-400 SAM unit that was used in the deadly attack on a pizza restaurant in Kramatorsk, Donetsk Oblast, in the summer of 2023.
A member of the Ukrainian Armed Forces explains in the video that they had been waiting for the ATACMS missiles for quite some time, and their presence in Ukraine gives the Russians "a clear understanding that there is nowhere for them to hide."
“When we received the first ATACMS missiles, it was a great joy for us because we knew we would be able to do even more work, maximally destroy the enemy...,” the masked soldier in the video says.
“Now targets like logistics warehouses, command posts, which are far behind enemy lines, have become totally accessible to us... We'll find them, for sure, even in the afterlife.”
Another Ukrainian servicemember praised ATACMS missiles as “extraordinary” piece of equipment.
“The enemy must understand that we will exact revenge for our fellow Ukrainians; as conscious citizens, we do absolutely everything to protect our homes," he added.
In 2023, the United States began supplying ATACMS to Ukraine but had only been providing a limited number of older, medium-range models until now. In October 2023, Ukraine first received ATACMS missiles with a range of approximately 160 kilometers (100 miles).
Washington is now leaning towards sending a longer-range version of the missile to Kyiv, NBC News reported on Feb. 19, citing unnamed U.S. officials.
