Ukrainian troops face shell shortages as resources shift to Kursk offensive

Ukrainian forces holding back the Russian offensive in Donetsk Oblast have returned to rationing artillery shells following the start of operations in Russia’s Kursk region, according to a report by the Financial Times.
The report highlights that Russian forces are pushing through Ukrainian defenses, making significant advances in Donetsk Oblast.
An unnamed commander of a Ukrainian artillery brigade in the east said part of the reason for Russia's advance is that Kyiv has shifted its limited resources northward.
The commander noted that his unit has resumed rationing artillery shells for the first time since U.S. aid to Ukraine was delayed by Congress. This was due to the redistribution of ammunition for the offensive in Kursk.
According to the report, Ukraine has relocated more than 10,000 troops, including elite airborne and mechanized brigades, from Donetsk and Kharkiv oblasts to support the operation in Kursk.
Military analysts believe that at least 20 Ukrainian units participated in the incursion into Kursk Oblast. Some of these units were intended to serve as reserve forces to help strengthen defensive lines and provide rest for troops who have been on the front lines for an extended period.
Several soldiers told FT that officers and infantrymen on the eastern front are facing prolonged stints at the front without rotation.
One unnamed soldier remarked that before being deployed to Kursk, he had fought for several months near Toretsk without a break.
"Right now, no one can ask for a rotation break. We were in reserve, but now we’re here (in Kursk Oblast)," he said.
