Top general Zaluzhnyi honors poet-soldier “Dali” killed in battle defending Ukraine

Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi received a copy of the debut book by Ukrainian poet and soldier Maksym “Dali” Kryvtsov, who was killed at the front on Jan. 7.
The book, entitled “Poems from the Trenches,” was published in December.
The Ukrainian commander-in-chief shared a selfie with a book by Kryvtsov.
With the news of his death, “Poems from the Trenches,” which PEN Ukraine named one of the best Ukrainian books of 2023, quickly sold out.
Kryvtsov was delighted to see his book in print and, even at the preparation stage, he was pushing his publisher to release the book, his friends and colleagues said.
In his last post on Facebook, the poet invited his followers to play a game with his book.
"Shall we play a game?” he wrote.
“You give me the page number and line (top or bottom), and I'll take a photo of that line. Just don't do it as a fortune telling – only if you’re in the mood. Because 90% of the poems here are about death."
Reacting to Zaluzhnyi’s photo, Valeriy Puzyk, a Ukrainian artist, writer, screenwriter, and director wrote, "Dreams must come true. Valerii Zaluzhnyi got Maksym Kryvtsov's book.”
Publishing house Nash Format is already preparing an additional print run of the book, and will donate all the proceeds from the sale of this and future editions to the poet's family and the Reformation NGO for book projects for the military.
An exhibition of Kryvtsov’s photography will open at the Squat 17b space in Kyiv on Jan. 22. his birthday, along with a recital of his poetry entitled “Dali: I will get my life back.”
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
