Chasiv Yar remains under Ukrainian command, resisting Russian military efforts to seize the town, Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi reported on Telegram on April 6.
Despite Russia's air and artillery advantages, Ukrainian defenses have thwarted all attempts to penetrate the settlement.
Syrskyi outlined that Russian forces are actively engaging east of Chasiv Yar and around the nearby towns of Pervomayske and Vodyane. He noted significant challenges in various Donetsk Oblast regions, highlighting intensified conflicts in Klishchiyivka, Berdychiv, Orlivka, Vodyane, Pervomaiske, and Novomykhailivka.
Russian tactics include relentless offensive maneuvers, leveraging aerial and artillery strengths, and deploying infantry in various formations, from small platoons to larger battalion-sized groups.
Despite the persistent threats, Ukrainian troops have reported tactical victories in the Kupyansk and Lyman sectors and have secured strategic positions across the Dnipro River in Kherson Oblast.
On March 24, the U.S.-based think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported that Russian troops were approaching the outskirts of Chasiv Yar, but were unlikely to surround or capture it in the coming months.
Based on the available evidence, ISW experts concluded that Russian troops were stopped about a mile from the town.
According to another ISW report on April 3, the Russian forces have ramped up their mechanized attacks along various sectors of the front line before the muddy ground makes mechanized warfare difficult in the spring. Another possible reason for the intensified attacks is to take advantage of Ukraine's lack of military equipment before the expected Western security assistance arrives.
