Ukraine can hit key Russian airfields from Kursk Oblast, expert says
The advance into Russia’s Kursk Oblast has placed the Ukrainian military within reach of several Russian military airfields, Ukrainian Aviation expert Anatolii Khrapchynskyi said in an interview with NV Radio on Aug. 10.
Some of the airfields are used as bases for Russian strategic bombers, regularly used to launch missiles strikes on Ukrainian cities.
“Shaikovka, undoubtedly the base for Tu-22M3 strategic aviation, and Baltimore are very important airfields,” said Khrapchynskyi.
“Baltimore was one of the 26 airfields that Russia modernized by upgrading the runway and infrastructure, enabling their active use for years to come. I believe Baltimore, Dyagilevo, and Shaikovka are three critical airfields that can be targeted, possibly from the Kursk People’s Republic, if we can call it that.”
On Aug. 12, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi announced that Ukraine now controls 1,000 square kilometers of Russian territory in Kursk Oblast.
