Ukraine supports U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities
Ukraine has expressed support for the United States’ airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, calling them a “clear signal” to Tehran and accusing Iran of fueling instability in both the Middle East and Europe, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement published on June 22.
“We believe the measures taken by the United States in coordination with Israel against Iranian nuclear facilities have sent a clear message to the Iranian regime about the unacceptability of its continued policy aimed at destabilizing the security situation in the Middle East,” Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said.
The ministry emphasized that Iran’s nuclear program must be brought to an end to prevent it from posing further threats to other nations.
Ukrainian officials also reiterated that Iran is complicit in Russia’s war against Ukraine, supplying Moscow with drones and military technology. They stressed that Iran’s actions constitute a blatant violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, which Ukraine has repeatedly raised before the international community.
“We once again call on Iran’s leadership to stop aiding Moscow in its aggressive war against Ukraine,” the ministry said. “We are convinced that a determined policy of ‘peace through strength’—one that deprives the Iranian regime of the tools of terror and regional destabilization—can strengthen international peace and security not only in the Middle East but also in Europe. Ending Russia’s war against Ukraine likewise requires determination, leadership, and increased pressure on those unwilling to work toward peace.”
The ministry added that the Iranian people deserve a dignified life in peace with Israel and other nations. However, it warned that the situation in the Middle East remains extremely unstable and urged all sides to deescalate and return to diplomacy.
What is known about the U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities
In the early hours of June 22 Kyiv time, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that American forces had carried out airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites. He said the targets included uranium enrichment plants in Fordow and Natanz, as well as conversion and centrifuge production facilities in Isfahan.
Trump said the goal of the operation was to “destroy Iran’s uranium enrichment capabilities and eliminate the nuclear threat.”
According to CNN, the strikes were conducted by U.S. B-2 bombers using GBU-57 guided bunker-busting bombs—the first known use of these weapons in a combat operation. Sources told CNN the munitions were specifically chosen to target fortified underground facilities.
Later, the Pentagon confirmed additional details. U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. Dan Kane told reporters that the operation was named Midnight Hammer. He said roughly 75 precision-guided munitions were used in the strikes, including 14 massive bunker-busting missiles.
In response, Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization said it would continue its nuclear program despite the attack. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned that U.S. involvement in direct hostilities could lead to “irreparable damage” for Washington.
“They will suffer greater losses than they have in the past,” he said.
Later that morning, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that Iran had launched between 20 and 30 ballistic missiles toward Israel.
