Ukraine adds border marker on famous Snake Island, says Crimea is next – video
Ukrainian border guards (SBGS) and Defense Intelligence representatives restored the border marker on the famous Snake (Zmiyinyi) Island, as seen in a video released by the SBGS on Telegram on Aug. 12.
The sign that had stood on the Ukrainian island before Russia’s full-scale invasion “was brazenly destroyed by the Russian occupiers,” SBGS head Serhiy Deineko said.
The next border sign to be installed “in the Ukrainian Crimea after its liberation by the Ukrainian Defense Forces,” the SBGS head said.
Ukraine liberated Snake Island last summer. After powerful strikes by Ukraine’s Armed Forces, Russian troops hastily evacuated the remains of the garrison and left the strategically important island in the western Black Sea on June 20, 2022.
Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed at the time that the fleeing of its soldiers from the island was a “gesture of goodwill.”
The operation to liberate Snake Island was officially completed on July 4, and in a now iconic image, Ukrainian soldiers planted the Ukrainian flag on the island on July 7.
Russia bombed SnakeIsland three times in July 2023 after withdrawing from the grain deal.
