UK King highlights Ukraine support in speech on new government goals

New UK government under the leadership of Keir Starmer plans
to play a leading role in supporting Ukraine’s clear path to NATO membership,
stated British King Charles III in London The Guardian reported on on July 17.
Charles III delivered the traditional formal speech in the
House of Lords, in which he outlined the goals of the newly appointed
government.
“My government will continue to give full support to Ukraine
and its people and will seek to play leading role in providing Ukraine with a
clear path to NATO membership,” monarch said as he announced new government’s
agenda in the Palace of Westminster.
In addition, Charles III said, the new ministers will seek
to improve trade and economic relations between the United Kingdom and the
members of the European Union.
“My government will seek to reset relations with European
partners and work to improve the United Kingdom’s trade and investment
relationship with the European Union,” monarch summarized.
“My ministers will seek to conclude a new security pact to
strengthen cooperation on the common threats faced by the United Kingdom and
the European Union.”
New British government
The UK held early parliamentary elections on July 4.
According to the results, Labor defeated the Conservatives by a large margin for the
first time since 2005. They won 411 seats in the House of Commons out of a
total of 650 seats.
Labor Party leader Keir Starmer became the new Prime
Minister of Britain on July 5 replacing Conservative Rishi Sunak.
On the same day, he announced the composition of his government. The Foreign Office was headed by David Lammy, and John Healey became the Minister of Defense. Both politicians are supporters of Ukraine and have previously visited Kyiv.
