U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin hospitalized at Walter Reed, in good condition
U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin is currently hospitalized at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and is in good condition, the U.S. Department of Defense reported on Jan. 9, citing officials at the Center.
Austin is in communication with his senior staff, has full access to secure communications, and continues to monitor the daily operations of the Department of Defense worldwide, Pentagon Press Secretary Major General Pat Ryder said at the briefing the same day.
He added that Austin also receives updates from U.S. Central Command Commander Gen. Erik Kurilla and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Charles Quinton Brown Jr.
However, Ryder did not disclose when Austin will be discharged from the hospital.
The 70-year-old Defense Secretary has been in the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center since Jan. 1. The Pentagon kept this fact from the public, the White House, and Congress for most of last week, sparking a serious political reaction.
Austin has since apologized for not “ensuring that the public was properly informed.”
The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center announced on Jan. 9 that U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin is undergoing treatment for prostate cancer, detected at an early stage.
The White House said U.S. President Joe Biden has no plans to dismiss Austin because of his hospitalization.
