Turkiye, Romania, and Bulgaria launched joint mine clearance operations in the Black Sea to improve the safety of shipping in the region, particularly for grain exports from Ukraine, Bloomberg reported on July 1.
The Istanbul-led initiative is the first significant joint action by Black Sea countries since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It is aimed at neutralizing mines drifting into certain areas of the Black Sea.
Russia and Ukraine are key grain producers, and the war has jeopardized the safe passage of goods, Bloomberg writes.
In 2023, Kyiv launched its own Black Sea export route after Russia withdrew from the safe corridor agreement. This has successfully boosted exports and helped the Ukrainian economy grow faster than forecast, but the route remains risky, the news agency writes.
Turkiye, Romania, and Bulgaria are NATO member states, but their shipping forces are operated outside the Alliance, partly to avoid escalation in relations with Russia.
