Swiss parliament considers allowing re-exports of arms to Ukraine

The Security Committee of Switzerland’s National Council has supported a proposal to allow other countries to supply Swiss-made weapons to Ukraine, Swiss outlet Blick reported on June 18.
The proposal seeks to amend the Swiss War Materiel Act. It was backed by 10 committee members, opposed by 10, with four abstaining.
The decisive vote came from Committee Chairwoman Seiler Graf, a representative of the Social Democratic Party. She stated that most committee members want to change the current law, which prohibits the re-export of weapons to Ukraine.
The bill will now be submitted to the National Council for consideration, but it is unclear if it will garner enough votes for approval. If passed, it must then be approved by the upper house, the Council of States.
If the bill is approved, Germany would be allowed to supply Ukraine with Swiss-made ammunition, Denmark with wheeled combat vehicles, and Spain with anti-aircraft missile systems.
On May 15, Bloomberg reported that Switzerland aims to increase weapons exports while maintaining the ban on direct supplies to Ukraine.
