Sweden sending 250 mine detectors to search for landmines scattered after Kakhovka dam flooding

Sweden has sent 250 mine detectors to Ukraine to eliminate the consequences of Russia’s destruction of the Kakhovka dam, Sweden’s Ministry of Defense reported on June 14.
“Sweden and the European Union strongly condemn the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant in Kherson Oblast,” reads the report.
“This shows a new level of destruction of critical Ukrainian civil infrastructure.”
Sweden will continue to support Ukraine as long as necessary and will continue to put pressure on Russia, the agency stressed.
The equipment sent by Stockholm was intended for civilian mine clearance, said Swedish Minister for Civil Defense Carl-Oskar Bohlin.
This operation will help Ukraine secure the areas that were affected by flooding after the explosion of the Kakhovka dam, he noted.
“The mines scattered after the explosion of the Kakhovka dam pose a serious threat to the life and health of the civilian population in the area,” the minister said.
“The ability to detect mines is one way to protect civilians and ensure humanitarian access, as floating mines and unexploded remnants can move far beyond beaches.”
All 250 mine detectors are expected to be delivered to Ukraine shortly, the agency added.
The Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant has been completely destroyed and cannot be restored, reported Ukrhydroenergo. Ukraine’s South Command said the dam was not entirely destroyed, but the damage is significant.
More than 3,000 people have contacted law enforcement about flooded houses, while 3,761 people have been evacuated from Kherson and Mykolayiv oblasts as of June 14, said the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
As of June 14, the water level in Kherson Oblast has dropped to almost two meters, while dozens of settlements remain flooded.
