Minister Vereshchuk: 6 million Ukrainians live under Russian occupation
About 6 million Ukrainians, including 1.5 million children, are living in Russian-occupied territories, Reintegration Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said at the All-Ukrainian Forum “Culture in Time of War. Human Capital” on June 26.
Additionally, another 5 million Ukrainians are internally displaced.
"Some of them have been left without anything, but they do not change their Donetsk or Luhansk registration, waiting to return," Vereshchuk said.
Illegal Abductions of Ukrainian Children
In 2023, the European Parliament reported that the number of Ukrainian children illegally abducted to Russia could reach 300,000. Members of the European Parliament believe that Russians began taking Ukrainian children in 2014 when they occupied Crimea and parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts.
"No one can say for sure how many Ukrainians, including children, adult civilians, and military personnel, are in Russian captivity," President Zelenskyy said on Feb. 26.
As of May 2024, at least 19,546 children have been abducted or forcibly displaced by Russia, and 2,015 children are reported missing, according to the Ukrainian state platform Children of War.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
