17,000 Russian soldiers killed, 30,000 injured in Avdiivka capture – Tavria Defense Forces
About 17,000 Russian soldiers were killed and 30,000 others injured during the capture of the Ukrainian stronghold city in the partially occupied Donetsk Oblast, Tavria Defense Forces spokesman Dmytro Lykhoviy said in an interview with the BBC on Feb. 17.
Meanwhile, former Aidar battalion company commander and war veteran Yevhen Dykyi estimated the number of Russians killed in Avdiivka at at least 60,000 in his Feb. 17 interview with Radio NV.
On Feb. 17, Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had withdrawn from Avdiivka. The commander-in-chief said that the decision was made to avoid encirclement and to save the lives and health of the soldiers.
During the withdrawal of units from Avdiivka, a small number of Ukrainian soldiers were taken prisoner, Tavria Operational-Strategic Group Commander Oleksandr Tarnavskyi reported on Feb. 17.
The withdrawal from Avdiivka was the correct decision to safeguard the lives of Ukrainian defenders, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during his speech at the Munich Security Conference on Feb. 17.
