Almost 30 years in a colony: 33 Ukrainian soldiers illegally tried in Donetsk

Russians initiated a fresh trial against Ukrainian soldiers in temporarily occupied Donetsk, with 33 people having been illegally sentenced to 27-29 years in maximum security penal colonies, reported BBC on Feb. 7.
The self-proclaimed "supreme court" of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), a group internationally recognized as terrorists, convicted the Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) of "cruel treatment of the civilian population" and employing "prohibited methods of warfare" during the period from Feb. 24 to March 10, 2022.
Five soldiers of the 36th Marine Brigade which defended Mariupol are among those sentenced by the “court” of quasi-organizations puppet authorities.
Geneva Convention grants the right to a fair trial for all POWs, but Russia constantly violates its norms. 22 POWs from the Azov Battalion faced trial in Rostov-on-Don on June 14. Among them were eight were women who worked as cooks in the battalion.
The so-called "court" in the temporarily occupied Donetsk Oblast sentenced one soldier to "life imprisonment" and two soldiers of the 56th Motorized Brigade to 30 years in November 2023. Ukraine's human rights ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, has labeled these actions as additional war crimes committed by the Russian Federation.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
