Russia won’t be able to carpet-bomb Ukraine, Air Force says
Russia likely won’t be able to carry out massive, Syria-style carpet-bombing campaigns in Ukraine, Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat told Ukrainian TV broadcasters on Nov. 9.
According to Ihnat, Ukraine has sufficient anti-air capability to counter aircraft dropping free-falling bombs.
“First of all, Ukraine has air defenses that keep out planes that drop free-falling bombs,” said Ihnat.
“We’re receving additional Western equipment, gradually replacing Soviet-era air defense with modern systems. They (Russian air force) will find no quarter in Ukrainian skies.”
He noted that the Russian air force conducted its Syrian bombing campaigns with 200–500-kilogram bombs – just as they did in Ukraine’s Izyum and Mariupol, which lacked adequate anti-air coverage.
“(Russian) planes were flying at high altitudes, beyond the reach of our MANPADS,” Ihnat explains.
