Russia warns retaliation if Japan sends Patriot missiles to Ukraine

Russia's Foreign Ministry has warned of possible "countermeasures" against Japan if the country's PAC-3 missiles for the Patriot system are transferred to Ukraine, Japanese outlet NHK reported on Aug. 1.
Deputy Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Nastasin warned that Moscow would consider Japan hostile to Russia if it proceeds with certain actions.
Nastasin added that Russia reserves the right to take "the most resolute countermeasures," including in the context of bilateral relations with Japan, but did not specify what those measures would be.
In December 2023, Japan formalized policy changes allowing it to export Patriot missiles to the United States. This move will enable Washington to send more air defense equipment to Ukraine, following a request from the Biden administration.
In July 2024, the Japanese Ministry of Defense signed an agreement to transfer land-based missiles to the United States, which is experiencing a shortage of interceptors due to its support for Ukraine.
