Russia negotiating new ‘grain deal’ with Turkey and Qatar — report

Russia, Turkey, and Qatar are preparing
their own tripartite grain
export agreement, German newspaper Bild reported on Aug. 18, citing
correspondence between Ankara and Moscow officials.
According to the documents examined by Bild, Turkey will arrange shipments of Russian grain, while Qatar acts as a financial backer for the scheme. The new deal reportedly involves supplying Russian grain — much of which may have been stolen from southern Ukraine — primarily to African countries.
Additionally, the article said that Moscow gave Ankara advance warning of its intent of abandoning the Black Sea Grain Initiative (BSGI) in July.
At the same time, the correspondence shows that Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has asked Russia to return to the BSGI deal with Ukraine, and also suggested operating "under the auspices of the UN.”
The report adds that Turkey is trying to link grain exports from Ukraine and Russia and mutually secure them. While Ukraine simply wants to export its grain, Russia is trying to dictate what its neighbor “should or shouldn't do via bombings.”
According to Bild, the new agreement might be signed this weekend in Budapest, Hungary. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is reportedly expected to arrive in Budapest soon.
