Russia deploys modified Ka-52M helicopters in Ukraine's south
Russia has reinforced its forces in the south of Ukraine with a small number of a brand-new Ka-52M Super Alligator combat helicopters, UK Defense Intelligence reported in their latest update on the ongoing full-scale war in Ukraine as of 27 July.
This modification of the Ka-52 Alligator helicopter is based on Russia's experience in Syria and is currently one of the most powerful Russian weapons in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, UK intelligence stated.
Russia has lost about 40 such helicopters since the start of the full-scale invasion.
Evidence of use of the Ka-52M by Russia in Ukraine's south include, according to UK intelligence, pictures of a crew next to a brand-new helicopter published in social media, as well as Russian soldiers expressing their gratitude for the provided materiel.
One of the key improvements of the modified Ka-52M helicopter is a new anti-tank missile, LMUR (“Light Multipurpose Guided Rocket”). It has an attack range of 15 km, and are used to attack behind the Ukrainian frontline air defense's range limits.
Ukrainian soldiers of the 38th Separate Marine Brigade intercepted a Russian Ka-52 combat helicopter on July 25.
Russian Colonel Vitaly Tabachnikov was eliminated with the helicopter as well, Russian media reported, claiming that the colonel was an important figure in the Russian military.
Tabachnikov was the commander of the 112th Separate Helicopter Regiment in the Russian Air Force, based out of the city of Chita.
Russia has lost a total of 310 helicopters and 315 warplanes in Ukraine since the launch of the full-scale invasion.
