Russia’s strategy of using minorities as cannon fodder can backfire, says Ukraine’s General Staff

Russian military commands sends non-ethnically Russian soldiers into the riskiest attacks, which is leading to growing discontent among Russia’s minority groups, Ukraine’s General Staff reported on July 19.
This discontent has resulted in the creation of several anti-war groups composed of Russian national minorities, though these are typically located outside of Russia, such as the Free Buryatia Foundation. Other independent organizations representing national minorities, such as Tatarstan’s All-Tatar Public Center, have been forcibly shuttered by the Russian government on trumped-up charges of “extremism.”
The General Staff also noted that due to the large amount of injuries and deaths among the invading Russian troops, forced mobilization of Ukrainian citizens, a war crime under international law, in the occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts continue.
