A rally to remember the Mariupol defenders still held captive by Russia, in particular from Ukraine’s Azov Brigade, took place in Kyiv’s Lviv Square on March 3.Participants held posters reminding of the soldiers who have been in Russian captivity for almost two years.

Mariupol defenders found themselves completely surrounded at the Azovstal plant after two months of fighting for the city in the spring of 2022. The situation was complicated by the depleted stocks of weapons, shortages of food and medicine, and significant number of injured.
Mariupol defenders appealed to the world for evacuation from Azovstal, however Russia did not agree to any of the options proposed by Ukraine.
Mariupol defenders followed orders and hoped for the support of the Ukrainian people, Azov said on May 16, 2022. Commanders in Azovstal received an order from the highest military leadership to "save the lives of soldiers," Ukraine’s Armed Forces’ General Staff reported.
Mariupol defenders left Azovstal and surrendered to Russian captivity between May 16-20.
Russia confirmed 2,349 soldiers to have left Azovstal. The so-called evacuation was monitored by the Red Cross International Committee.
Some of the Mariupol defenders have been in captivity for almost two years.
