Poland criticizes Germany’s stand on Ukraine’s NATO membership
Polish Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs,
Piotr Wawrzyk, has criticized the position of the German Minister of Defense,
Boris Pistorius, regarding Ukraine’s NATO membership, Polish news agency PAP reported on April 23.
“If Germany did not think as it does now, did not try to slow down Ukraine’s entry into the North Atlantic Alliance, if Ukraine had received an invitation to the Alliance in Munich many years ago, there would be no war in Ukraine today,” Wawrzyk said.
He also criticized Pistorius’ statement that the question of Ukraine’s accession to NATO should be decided with a cool head, asking when this “cool head” time will come.
Wawrzyk stressed that Poland supports Ukraine’s accession to both NATO and the EU.
An IRI poll from March showed that 82% of Ukrainians support Ukraine’s accession to NATO, which is close to a record level.
Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba stated during the meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Commission that Kyiv categorically rejects the “open-door policy” principle at the summit in Vilnius — meaning that Kyiv expects eventual NATO membership to be guaranteed, and not a drawn-out bureaucratic process.
