Nearly 80% of Ukrainian refugees intend to return home — UN
According to UN data, about 76% of Ukrainian
refugees intend to return home, and 15% have declared their firm wish to
move back to Ukraine, Karen Whiting, the Deputy Representative of the UN
Refugee Agency in Ukraine, said during an appearance on the (Un)Safe Country
podcast on Aug. 16.
Whiting noted that a high percentage of internally displaced persons also share this desire to return home.
“As for the various intentions of refugees and internally displaced persons, I think they are quite similar: 76% of refugees and 82% of internally displaced Ukrainians intend to return home,” said Whiting.
“And about 15% of both refugees and internally-displaced Ukrainians say they want to return home within the next three months, this percentage remains relatively stable throughout 2022 and 2023"
When it comes to displaced Ukrainians who want to settle elsewhere in the country, more are finding opportunities to do so.
"We see the local authorities in a number of western and central regions making efforts for internally displaced persons to access social protection services, as well as schools and the labor market," the UN representative said.
Whiting pointed out that local communities not only welcome displaced persons, but increasingly view this as an opportunity to make their own regions more economically vibrant.
