NATO troops in Ukraine won’t be used to fight Russia – France
Should NATO allies at some point decide to deploy
troops to Ukraine, the force could perform non-combat tasks, such as
mine-clearing, cybersecurity, or arms manufacturing, French Foreign Minister
Stéphane Séjourné said on Feb. 27, as reported by Le Figaro.
Séjourné suggested that the mere presence of Western troops in Ukraine would not cross a "threshold of belligerence."
As the war in Ukraine enters its third year, Western nations had been "considering new steps to support Ukraine,” according to the minister. He added that a NATO ground force would not necessarily be used to directly engage Russian troops in combat.
“Some of these actions may require a presence on Ukrainian soil without crossing a threshold of belligerence,” he said.
Before a summit of European leaders in Paris on Feb. 26, Slovak PM Robert Fico said that several NATO and EU member countries were discussing the potential of sending their military forces to Ukraine through bilateral agreements.
French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed later that day that troop deployment to Ukraine cannot be ruled out, although NATO allies are yet to reach consensus on the issue.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
