Defense ministers of NATO
member states will discuss the potential transfer of Western jet fighters to
Ukraine at a meeting in June, Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said in an
interview with Spiegel on May 18.
When asked about the potential transfer of jets to Ukraine, Stoltenberg noted that some countries, such as Poland and Slovakia, have already provided the country with their Soviet-era MiG-29s.
“We are constantly discussing whether modern Western fighters are needed – both within NATO and with Ukraine,” the secretary said.
“I expect this topic to be discussed at the NATO Defense Ministers meeting in June.”
Stoltenberg added that if a positive decision is made, Ukraine will require huge amounts of ammunition, spare parts, and round-the-clock technical maintenance – in addition to the aircraft themselves.
Ukrainian officials previously said that Kyiv hopes to receive between 40 and 50 F-16s from its allies and use them to form three to four squadrons to protect its skies from Russian attacks.
On May 16, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba announced that several countries are ready to transfer modern aircraft to Ukraine, as part of a broader international coalition. According to Kuleba, this will ultimately require the United States to sign off on the decision.
