Latvia provides 500 drones to Ukraine for combat support
Latvia will deliver 500 drones to Ukraine, with the units already prepared for shipment. Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds announced the move on Aug. 13, via X.
"The latest drone package is ready! Around 500 Latvian-made drones will support Ukrainians in carrying out various combat missions," Spruds wrote.
On July 29, the Latvian outlet LSM reported that Latvia would send 100 FPV drones to Ukraine, funded through an initiative led by Foreign Minister Baiba Braže earlier this year.
According to the report, Ukraine has already received over 300 Latvian-made Irsis and Lāčplēsis drones free of charge.
The Drone Coalition for Ukraine was established by Ukraine and Latvia, with the decision made during Andris Spruds’ visit to Kyiv in December 2023.
The coalition is led by the United Kingdom and Latvia, with additional support from Denmark, Estonia, Lithuania, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden.
In May, Spruds announced that Latvia plans to invest €20 million in the drone coalition to support Ukraine in 2024. An equal amount will be allocated to strengthen Latvia’s own military drone capabilities.
