Russian attack kills 21 in Kyiv, highest civilian death toll in single attack on capital
Nineteen bodies have been recovered from the rubble of a warehouse in Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district as of the morning of Dec. 31, making it the highest civilian death toll in a single attack on the capital since the start of the Russian invasion, the head of the city's military administration, Serhiy Popko, reported on Telegram on Dec. 31.
The combined drone and missile attack caused damage to a residential building and started a fire on the territory of a garage cooperative, a business center, and warehouses.
Another warehouse, in Kyiv’s Podil district, also caught fire as a result of the mass attack, spreading a blaze over an area of approximately 3,000 square meters.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko declared a day of mourning on Jan. 1.
Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack against Ukraine overnight on Dec. 29. Explosions rang out in many larger cities, such as Kyiv and Dnipro, and smaller ones, such as Konotop.
Thirty-nine people were killed and 159 others were wounded in the massive Russian drone and missile attack on Ukraine on Dec. 29, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram on Dec. 30.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, said that air defense forces shot down 87 cruise missiles and 27 Shahed drones.
