Kremlin ‘pleased’ with U.S. statements ruling out Ukraine’s NATO membership
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called recent U.S. remarks
suggesting Ukraine’s NATO membership is off the table “positive,” speaking at a
briefing on April 21, according to The
Guardian.
“We’ve heard from Washington at various levels that
Ukraine’s membership in NATO is excluded. Of course, that brings us
satisfaction and aligns with our position,” Peskov said.
He went on to repeat a familiar Kremlin narrative, claiming
that Ukraine’s accession to NATO “threatens the national interests” of the
aggressor state and was one of the “root causes” of Russia’s invasion of
Ukraine.
“NATO is not on the table. You are not going to be part of
NATO. That’s not new,” Kellogg told Fox News.
On April 20, The Wall Street Journal reported that the
administration of Donald Trump had offered Ukraine a ceasefire proposal that
includes several concessions to Russia — notably, recognition of the annexation
of Crimea and a ban on NATO membership. According to WSJ, Washington is
awaiting a response from Kyiv this week.
