Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas resigned along with her government, and will serve as acting prime minister until a new government comes to power, holding the PM chair since January 2021, reported ERR on July 15.
Kallas recalled that she became PM in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and was forced to "make decisions immediately," as "there was no transition period." Then came the energy crisis, Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and the recession.
Kaja Kallas will replace Josep Borrell as High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the EU. The media call her an ardent opponent of Russian dictator Putin.
Kallas might will be replaced as prime minister and head of the Reform Party by Climate Minister Kristen Michal.
According to the Bild tabloid, Callas' distrust of the Kremlin is rooted in her own family history. During World War II, Soviet regime deported her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to Siberia in railway cattle car. They returned to Estonia many years later. Kallas' father was a European Commissioner for ten years until 2014.
