Law enforcement updates on investigation into deadly January 2023 helicopter crash
The investigation into the deadly Jan. 18, 2023, helicopter crash in Brovary that killed Interior Minister Denys Monastyrskyi is still ongoing, with the case materials now spanning 163 volumes, Stat Bureau of Investigations (SBI) press officer Tetiana Sapyan told Ukrainian TV broadcasters on Jan. 18.
"The pre-trial investigation itself contains 163 volumes," said Sapyan.
“Each volume is about 250 pages long. It takes time to familiarize ourselves with all the materials. But in 2024, the indictments will go to court, I think we will talk about it sometime in the spring.”
The SBI completed the investigation into the helicopter crash in Brovary in late November 2023. Five State Emergency Service officials who violated flight safety rules were charged.
During the investigation of the tragedy, dozens of examinations were conducted, witnesses were questioned, and the timeline of the incident was carefully reconstructed.
"The day of the crash was examined minute by minute," Sapyan added.
“Foreign experts and representatives of the French helicopter manufacturer were also involved in the process.”
The ministry helicopter crashed in Brovary near Kyiv on the morning of Jan. 18, 2023, killing Interior Minister Denys Monastyrskyi, First Deputy Minister Yevhen Yenin and State Secretary of the Interior Yuriy Lubkovych.
The helicopter fell near a kindergarten and several high-rise buildings. Eighteen people died because of the accident, three of whom were children. Nine people were on board the helicopter – none survived. Twenty-nine people were injured, including 15 children.
The Ukrainian parliament appointed the head of the National Police, Ihor Klymenko, as the new interior minister on Feb. 7, 2023.
